150 minutes of movement per week ...as a Mom?!

Research shows that up to half of the functional decline we experience between age 30 and 70 is due to lack of physical activity. HALF! Wild. It is also proven that children with active parents are more likely to be active themselves. By increasing our heart rates for a minimum of 150 minutes (or 2.5 hours) per week, we can significantly decrease our risk (and therefore also our children’s risk) of over 25 chronic health conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer, colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Now, this all sounds well and good…but I know what you are thinking. HOW are you going to come up with 150 minutes per week to move your body enough to sweat and discover these amazing health benefits while continuing to be the best mom, wife, friend, colleague, and/or whatever other roles you carry each week? I am going to go through my best three tips on how to begin shifting your mindset on creating healthy habits while raising chil...

Three Years!

Just over three years ago, the idea of Fit Your Life bringing specialized fitness classes to the women of Edmonton was born as a result of the desire to combine my passion, curiosity, and interest of the immense physical and emotional changes that occur during the pre- and postnatal periods and how an increased level of fitness can affect this beautiful transformation. When I think about all that I have learned in the last three years, I smile. Welcomed advice from business-savvy friends and support from those who navigate social media with more finesse than I have made this learning curve more enjoyable!  36 months ago, Fit Your Life group fitness classes began by offering a six week pre-registered session for both Mom & Me Fit and Prenatal Fit; with four and seven participants, respectively. Since that time, 400+ women have attended classes, we have welcomed over 100 Fit Babies, and we have inspired so many to find their best self amongst the chaos that can be the ...

Morning Motivation

I love early morning workouts. Seriously. Yes, I have always been known as a morning person and really prefer to do anything first thing in the morning rather than in the evening! After becoming a mom, my routine had to shift and expectations had to change. As an early riser, I have began raising early risers, so if I want to fully embrace the morning and exercise alone I must wake at 5am! Is this easy? No! do I do this every day? No way! Am I thankful when I do? Heck yes! Exercising first thing in the morning boosts my energy, mood, and patience for the entire day. How does one come to make this a sustainable habit - to get up early and move first thing in the morning? Here are my best tips!! Prepare for success a) Set out your workout and your “regular” outfits the night before. This way you don’t have to think about your clothes in the morning – just get dressed! b) Have your coffee and breakfast ready. We grind our beans and prep our coffee maker at nigh...

Tips to feel great on your vacation!

We love getting away as much as possible! Whether it is a weekend getaway to the mountains or jet-setting across the border, we look forward to recharging, unplugging, and enjoying quality time with each other. We work hard to move daily and fuel our bodies with nutritious food. We shouldn’t spoil all our hard work even though we are slowing down the pace for a few days! For this re ason, I have put together four tips to help ensure that you maintain your progress even while relaxing and taking some well-deserved time away! 1) Get outside! One of the best ways to be able to slow down and enjoy new areas is to go for a walk or jog through them. You will soak up so much more of your surroundings as opposed to driving by and with all the new things to look at you might even forget about the physical benefits you are achieving! Depending on where you are traveling to, you can search websites, blogs, or check out the local information centre for scenic hikes and trails to enjoy!...

Mom & Me Fit, Prenatal Fit, Family Fit, & Mom & Me Yoga in Edmonton!! Our new Fall 2017 Schedule is here!

The evening air is cooler, the sunrise is later, and it seems like we are all settling back into our routines. I love fall. I love the crisp breeze and wearing scarves. Even for those of us not in school or without little ones in school yet, the fall is still a great time to hit a reset button. Small changes in our daily routine can have huge impacts on our health and overall fitness goals. Wake up 15 minutes earlier each day to sneak in a quick sweat or stretch. Challenge yourself to test out one new healthy recipe weekly. Carry around a water bottle to make sure you are hydrated. Focus on your alignment throughout your work day or while playing with your little ones. Schedule a class or two to attend every week to make yourself accountable to others. These are just a few ideas, but the list is lengthy! How are you adding a little extra health to your daily life? A little does go a long way and remember, do not strive to be perfect. Strive to find a healthy balance ...

September 1km Challenge - join us!

Many people fear September first because it means the return of routine, cooler weather, and shorter days. Although I can't do anything about the cooler weather (unless to help you get excited about ski season!!!) or the decreasing daylight, I can do my best to get you EXCITED about hopping back into a healthier routine! I think it is safe to say that most of us enjoy a few extra treats, a little less sleep, and perhaps less structured exercise during the summer months. September is the perfect time to hop back onto the fit bandwagon and create some new great habits! Through our September 1km Challenge, we want to help you move every day! Your goal will be to walk, jog, or run for a minimum of one kilometre each day in September! That is 30km spread across one month.  Pretty amazing! You do not need to live in Edmonton, or even have ever attended a Fit Your Life class. This Challenge is open to everyone around the globe. Let's get  moving! How it works: De...

Making memories

We do what we love and we love what we do. Finding our passion through inspiring others to move their bodies in ways that feels amazing to them is what we strive for in and outside of our classes. The three of us (Erin, Jamie, and Kellie) all grew up being active and movement has always been a part of our lives. We realize this is not always the case for those attending our classes. Our goal is to make fitness fun! Smiles. Laughter. High fives. Games. New moves. That is how we find what movement speaks to us and what inspires us to keep our bodies moving. Today, we held a free Family Fit workout in Magrath Heights Park (southwest Edmonton) and oh my gosh was it fun!!!! Everyone was invited. Some mamas came by themselves for some kid-free time, others brought their husbands and children, some brought a friend. We had new moms, expecting moms, and weekend warrior moms. It was amazing!! The energy that was created from families moving their bodies, enjoying the fresh air a...

Lock Your Ladies Down

Did you know more than 70% of women are wearing the wrong size of bra??? I’ll give you a minute to digest that number…70%! And here’s another fun fact for you, Brooks’ research found that 25% of women don’t work out as hard as they could because of breast bounce.   WHAT?! Both stats are crazy but I want you to know that you don’t have to be a part of those statistics.   You can be a woman who has fully supported breasts.  One who never worries about breast bounce during workouts.   You can give it your all and never fear that your breasts are going to become saggy from lack of support – YES! That is a thing.   You might be asking yourself, how? How do I find out about proper fitting sports bras and what to look for when shopping?   How do I know if my sports bra is fitting correctly?   I have compiled all of the information you will need to know to answer these very important questions.    So, for the sake of your breast...
